40 Short Words That Appear in Almost Every Crossword

Fill enough crosswords and you start meeting the same short words again and again. Setters need words that are full of vowels to make the grid fit, so a small group of three- and four-letter words turns up in puzzle after puzzle. Solvers call them “crosswordese”. Learning them is the quickest way to finish more grids.

Why these words keep coming back
Crossword grids interlock, so every letter is shared by two answers. Words that alternate vowels and common consonants — like ALOE or ERIE — fit almost anywhere, which is why setters reach for them when a corner of the grid gets tight.
If you have two or three letters of a short answer, try the solver with just those letters. Short crosswordese answers usually come up near the top.
